Our home

This past week has been super crazy for us with getting things done for the new house. All our paperwork is in order and now we are just waiting on a lawyers appointment and to sign the final paperwork. We had the house inspection done Thursday and everything went well. The house needs minor work but nothing out of the norm for a slightly older home. I'm still in a bit of shock that we actually purchased our first home. We drove by last night and the sold sign is finally up :)

When we first went to look at it, I stepped inside and was like "oh this is small" but as we went to look at each room I started loving the house more and more and it suits us perfectly. It's a rancher home with 3 bedroom (each a pretty decent size) and 1.5 baths. The half bath ensuite is in the master bedroom.

The kitchen is what sold me. It's got a ton of cupboards, and a great layout. 3 people could easily work in the kitchen the way its designed. I love the fact that there's a skylight as well. We plan on updating the cupboards at a later date. I also love the fact that its open above the cupboards so we can put decorative items or store things above them. The door with the glass window was another charming feature.

Friday we went to look at paint colors, and decided on a few. The two smaller bedrooms are going to be a soft blue color and our bedroom will be a cheery yellow. The hardest part is deciding on the living room. The living room is open to the dining room so we would need to pick a color that is used in both rooms. So far we are looking at orangish colors (think fall orange not halloween orange).

Last night we went to look at flooring since we plan to take out the pink carpet in the living room and replace it with hardwood. There are so many options and color choices, we definitly need to go back before we can make a decision.

Hubs and I are so excited and can't wait to move in. I will blog more about it in another post. I just wanted to share the news.

Super Excited!!!

This week has been a busy week for Hubs and I. Tues I was a nail model for Hub's cousin who is talking a nail course and needed someone to put gel nails on (BTW I'm loving them). Last night was Hub's cousin's husbands birthday, so we went out and celebrated with a birthday dinner and cake at their place. Today I was supposed to attend a baby show with a pregnant coworker but unfortunately the show ended by the time we got there (we had to work). I have a bit of a vent on this since the website said the show opened at 10:30 and never gave an end time so we assumed it would go until at least 2. We were wrong but ended up scoring a goody bag with some neat things :) So at least it wasn't  a total loss.

As for why I'm super excited... I'm going to wait a few days before I say anything just in case (AND NO I'M NOT PREGNANT OR SUSPECTING IT). Hopefully all goes well so please wish us luck.

Happy Valentine's Day

I know it's a day early, but I work tomorrow and Hubs and I have a special dinner "in" planned for tomorrow night. For Valentine's Day Hubs suprised me with a shopping spree. He told me about my gift a few days ago so that I could start my shopping. I've found a few great pieces so far, but still have a few things I'm hoping to pick up. We both decided that instead of going out for dinner tomorrow, we would plan a dinner in. Our menu will consist of:

-Steak
-Lobster
-Butternut squash pasta w/ rose sauce
-Red wine
-Cream puffs for dessert

What are your plans for Valentine's Day?

Wedding Colors

Probably one of the toughest decisions for a bride to be is picking the wedding colors. Color can say so much about a person and the overall feel of the event. For most brides, this decision will be an ongoing battle with a few changes along the way. For other brides they know what their colors will be right off the bat.

One of the inspirations that greatly helped me choose colors was http://www.theperfectpaletteblog.com/. This blog has so many color combinations and picture inspirations. You can even request a color palette. It's definitly a great visual and recommend it to all the brides to be out there.

For Hubs and I choosing our wedding colors wasn't the easiest decision (yes, we unfortunately weren't one of the few lucky couples who knew what colors we wanted right away). Initially I thought about red and champagne, but the more I thought about it, something just didn't feel right. Then I wanted all blues (at this point I had a slight obsession with the ocean and all things beach themed). Hubs expressed his concern that all blues would be, well, "a little boring" and that we should add a different color to it. His suggestion was chocolate brown. I know exactly what your thinking. Chocolate brown has been so overdone with the baby blue or baby pink or light green with it, in weddings over the last few years (No offense to anyone who has chosen these colors because I feel they are beautiful, just a little overdone).

The more I thought about it, the more the idea grew on me. Plus the chocolate brown color had a sentimental meaning behind it. Now I just had to choose a color to go with it. A light green was in the running for a bit because the combo seemed so fresh, but I still kept going back to the blues. I did some research and searched different color schemes and we decided to go with chocolate brown and aqua. This color scheme seemed perfect for us. Even though we were having a summer wedding, the aqua was bright enough to still provide us with a summery feel. The chocolate brown was a neutral so it didn't make things feel so dark and we used it more as the second color for accents. Also, this combo worked well with our outdoor ceremony and gave me the bit of  watery feel I wanted to keep in our wedding. Below is the image I used for our inspiration:

Picking wedding colors can be a very difficult task. Often times, the groom refuses to go with pink (which is often the first choice of the bride) or any other feminine palette. While the bride refuses to go with the manly palette the groom prefers. Another misconception many brides fall into is that they have to choose certain colors because of the season or month their wedding is in. So many summer brides feel they can't use black because its so dark, while winter brides feel they are stuck using red and green. These misconceptions aren't true. As a bride you can use any colors you want, any time of the year you want. To make colors work, its more in the details such as the length of the dresses and the type of fabrics used. Black works fine in the summer if its in a lighter fabric such as chiffon; while a color scheme of aqua and silver works in the winter if you use thicker fabrics and say tie in the theme of snowflakes and a winter-wonderland.

Some other ideas on helping to choose a color scheme include:

-What colors are in your ceremony/reception location (if gold and burgandy are the reception locations decor, make sure your colors of hot pink and navy won't make it look to busy)
-Don't choose to many colors, try to limit it to 1-2 main colors and an accent color, plus the flower colors
-Look at a color wheel for inspiration, you can go monochromatic, or choose colors that compliment one another such as royal blue and orange
-What are your favorite colors? What colors are found in your home?
-What is the feel your going for? (Blush pinks and ivory screams romantic, while hot pink and orange suggests fun and playful)
-Don't feel limited by the season. For a winter wedding you don't have to choose Christmas red and green with pinecones and poinsettias (you could do silver and ice blue, gold and burgandy, navy and silver, etc)
-Don't get stuck with a theme's cliche colors (i.e. beach theme doesn't have to be shells and blues, it can be soft oranges and pinks (think sunrise) or tan and coral and seafoam green with sandals, and starfish)

Good luck with choosing your colors!!

Wedding Style

Once Hubs and I decided on a wedding date our next step was to decide on our wedding style. If any of you are a bride to be you know just how many choices you have for the style of your wedding. You can have a traditional, modern, beach, outside, religious, budget, extravagant, etc, etc, etc. The list could go on forever.

Ceremony:

For our ceremony, since neither of us are very religious, we knew a church ceremony was out. Don't get me wrong, I think church weddings are gorgeous and love attending them, but the a church wedding just didn't fit Hub's and I's personality. We thought of having a beach ceremony, but the logistics of making one work, especially with our location wasn't feasible. In the end we decided on having an outdoor wedding in one of the many goreous parks here in Victoria. Once we decided on having a park wedding we had to choose our location. I did a quick google search to make a list of parks in our area and from there we narrowed down our choices based on the following criteria:

-Location
-Had to have some type of water around
-Parking availability
-Area suitable for a ceremony
-Photogenic

We narrowed our choices down to Saxe Point and Gorge Point Park. We loved the view of the ocean from Saxe Pointe, but the area to hold a ceremony was small. When we called to inquire about our date, it was booked until 5pm. Both Hubs and I felt that was much to late for our ceremony to start (we wanted an afternoon wedding). So we called and inquired about Gorge Park and they had an opening from 2-4pm on our date so we booked. This meant we could be the only wedding ceremony taking place at Gorge Park between 2-4pm on our wedding day. The fee for booking the park was $123.00 which was pretty reasonable. We couldn't imagine having had our ceremony anywhere else. The day of the wedding all the flowers were in bloom and the grass was green. We let our surroundings be our decor. Below are a couple pics of the Gorge Park:

For our reception we looked at numerous venues. We looked into hotel reception rooms, golf courses, outdoor tents, a castle. Since we were on a budget, the hotels were out of the question, the golf courses were to much of a hassle to try to arrange someone to sponsor us to have a reception there, and the outdoor tent and castle were way to much money. Some of the criteria we wanted for our reception venue included:

-Location
-Space (So many places we looked at were just way to tiny and cramped)
-Ability to provide our own alcohol and food (to cut back on expenses)
-Somewhere that looked somewhat classy but not too stuffy
-A view (which in the end we didn't get, but didn't matter)
-Wouldn't break the bank to rent
-Ability to hold our # of guests

Hubs was actually the one who found our reception site. I was talking with him one day saying how hard it was to find the perfect location and he suggested it. I know many of you ladies are like "A Fairground??" That was my exact thought too and I pictured a dusty field with attraction rides. Much to my surprise, when I googled the Saanich Fairgrounds I was quite suprised with what I found.

Our reception room

I instantly knew this was where we were going to get married. There was just so much going for this venue. For $750, we got:
-The rental of this hall from noon the day before our wedding until 1am the day after our wedding.
-The use of the kitchen
-A side foyer for our cocktail hour as well as the outdoor patio
-All our round and square tables and chairs included
-A mic and podium
-The room was 4000 sq. feet

We were able to have our head table in front of the stage with our guest tables horshoe-ed around us, with the bar and buffet line towards the back of the room. Also, for an additional $100 fee, they cleaned up and moved all the tables and chairs for us after the wedding was over.

I've seen this 101 in 1001 days blog "project" a few times before, but have never really paid much attention to it. I've been meaning to start it for a while now, and finally decided to do it. The only thing was that I underestimated how hard it would be to come up with 101 things! It took a while.

It's February

I can't believe its February already... in a week Hubs and I will be celebrating our 7 month wedding anniversary. It's scary to think that our 1 year anniversary is fast approaching so soon. So far February has come with some crappy news.... there was a meeting at work and 12 of the 26 terms hired will be laid off by the end of June. I know it doesn't seem like very many considering the amount of people without jobs, but I'm one of those terms who could be without a job. We all have to write a competition in the upcoming months and whoever places the highest will get the jobs. If I manage to get the job then I will become a full time permanent worker instead of a temp-full time worker (even though I've been there for almost 3 years already). Maybe its a sign to tell me its time to move on to bigger and better things.....
